COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been exposed to COVID 19 or diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition on the COVID 19 Notification Form (available via a link on the Student Code of Conduct COVID19 webpage). Course Information
Description This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2413, Calculus I.
Prerequisites MATH 1314 College Algebra
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. Apply calculus to solve business, economics, and social sciences problems.
2. Apply appropriate differentiation techniques to obtain derivatives of various functions, including logarithmic and exponential functions.
3. Solve application problems involving implicit differentiation and related rates.
4. Solve optimization problems with emphasis on business and social sciences applications.
5. Determine appropriate technique(s) of integration.
6. Integrate functions using the method of integration by parts or substitution, as appropriate.
7. Solve business, economics, and social sciences applications problems using integration techniques
Core Objectives * Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.
* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.
* Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

Applied Calculus, by Calaway, Hoffman, and Lippman.

This is an open source textbook, and is available to download for free online.

You will need to purchase an access code for the Lumen OHM website in order to access the homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. The cost for an access code is $25 and they are available at the campus bookstore or directly through the Lumen OHM website once you attempt to use the system.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies Blackboard/LumenOHM:

All of your course materials and assignments are accessible through LumenOHM via Blackboard. You will not need to sign up for or log on to any outside website, everything should be integrated fully into Blackboard, It is important that you are able to access Blackboard and that you do so regularly to check for any updates and/or announcements.

Homework:

All homework will be done online using Lumen Learning's Online Homework Manager, LumenOHM. The system is fully integrated in to Blackboard, so you do not need to register or log on to any outside websites. Simply log on to Blackboard and you will be able to get started. You will need to purchase an access code either from the campus bookstore, or through Blackboard once you attempt to access the homework. The cost is $25, but there is a free trial period you can use if you need time to come up with the money for payment. Your homework average will count as 20% of your final grade.

Quizzes:

There will be several quizzes in class at regular intervals throughout the semester. Please refer to the schedule on Blackboard for information on the quiz dates. Quizzes will be administered through LumenOHM, and your Quiz Average will count as 20% of your final grade.

Exams:

There will be two mid-term exams scheduled at regular intervals throughout the semester. Approximate dates for the exams are available on the schedule on Blackboard. I will announce more specific details about exams in class about a week before they occur, so make sure you stay informed. Exams will be administered on LumenOHM, and will each count as 20% of your final grade.

Final Exam:

There will be a comprehensive final exam at the end of the semester, which will occur according to the Final Exam Schedule. The final exam will be administered on LumenOHM, and will count as 20% of your final grade.
Attendance Policy Students are expected to be present and ON TIME for all class meetings, therefore attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class meeting through the use of a seating chart established by the end of the first week.

In addition to being present and on time for class, you are expected to be prepared and up to date in the material, remain for the entirety of each class meeting, and to be actively engaged in the daily activities and discussions.

Students not present at the beginning of class will be counted absent for the day, NO EXCEPTIONS (tardy=absent). Students with 3-6 absences may forfeit some or all of their attendance grade, while students with more than 6 absences may be asked to drop the course (or receive an F).

Any behavior which is disruptive or disrespectful to either the instructor or students in this class will not be tolerated, and anyone engaging in such behavior will be dealt with appropriately.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
